How I Teach Kids to Love Science | Cesar Harada | TED Talks

At the Harbour School in Hong Kong, Cesar Harada teaches citizen science and invention to the next generation of environmentalists. He’s moved his classroom into an industrial mega-space where imaginative kids work with wood, metal, chemistry, biology, optics and, occasionally, power tools to create solutions to the threats facing the world’s oceans. There, he instills a universal lesson that his own parents taught him at a young age: “You can make a mess, but you have to clean up after yourself.”

I taught my son how to read when he was still 14 months old. At the start, I assumed he might be a bit young but I gave it a try and followed this reading guide “fetching loli only” ( ). Now at Two years and 4 months, he can read a whole book on his own!

"Imagination is more important than knowledge"

Hanna Aisha

Really fascinating, congratulations for the dedication!

But to teach science like him, with all that technology and money to create what they want to, only exists there.

This is not the reality in the most schools of the world. Let me correct myself; this is really really far from other school's reality, specially in "third world" countries.

So, how to teach kids to love science?

How do I do this in my school? I want these opportunities for my students!

And I wonder WHY "education" in corporate "jesusland" is so problematic…

Abhishek Nigam

Wow! It's really inspiring to see children with help of their excellent teachers, solve such big problems. Their innovation and spirit really inspired.

just literally fell in love with this talk.I mean, I wish we could have such classes, where your imagination won't count against, but on the contrary lead to something unusual, eccentric , at the same time, beneficial and good.

Wow this is a amazing teacher it must be great to be a teacher in other countries that isn't America, since we're restricted to tests so teachers can't teach what they want, they have to teach what the test has. There's no free lance of teaching in America.

Dhillon Dhass

The world needs more people like him. You are an inspiration sir.

you should not be using a CF bulb for spectroscopy. They don't fit light continuously across the spectrum.

This is how school should be taught, not worksheets and eraser dust.

Exactly. Time for yet another step towards healthy secular world.

Este es el tipo de persona que cambia el mundo y la vida de muchas personas … en el buen sentido … buen hombre , la gente puede amar la ciencia con este Maestro y sus proyectos ……

" So plastic, oil, and radioactivity are all horrible, horrible legacies but the very worst legacy we can leave our children are lies."

Tariq Mulla
